Spotlight On Enterprise


At Hull's Spotlight Awards held to celebrate the success of Hull's young people and those that work with them - the title of Hull's Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 went to student Dave Garbera from a strong shortlist of three that included Gerard Jones whose business is based at the Enterprise Centre at the University of Hull and Curtis Noble a young man from Hymers College who has undertaken a range of young enterprise activities whilst still at Hymers.
Dave is Managing Director of KH Smilers who started his  company with other students whilst still at Kelvin Hall School, he is now a medical student at Liverpool University were he is also an ambassador for Enterprise UK and is currently writing a trilogy about his enterprise journey from his time involved in Young Enterprise Company Programme at school, his time at Wyke College and University running not one but two businesses and donating some of his profits to the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank.

Dave takes over the role from Amanda Hartley who in 2009 has represented Hull on the regional and national stage and was pleased to hand over her "crown" to another young entrepreneur who has received from the Youth Enterprise Bank.
Amanda said " I had a great year as Hull's young entrepreneur 2009 and as a West Hull girl was pleased to hand over the mantle to Dave who is a North Hull lad and someone who has Hull and enterprise "stamped" throughout his body"
Dave said " I am extremely honoured to be recognised in this way in my City by becoming  Hull's Young Entrepreneur of the Year for 2010 and looking forward to working with the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and Hull City Council to show how enterprising Hull's young people are especially during Business Week and Global Entreprenurship Week"

Charles Cracknell Holder of the Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion and  Hull's Youth Enterprise Manager said " Yet again shows that it is more likely that young people who undertake enterprise education activities in school are more likely to develop their enterprising idea later on in life both Dave and Amanda experienced enterprise education at school and have become successful entrepreneurs helping Hull's economy"
