Jobcentre Plus

We offer help and support for people who wish to move into self-employment. This involves training, business planning, mentoring and a period of test trading for those within the New Deal programme.

Similar support, without the test-trading premium, is available for those not eligible for New Deal.

In 2006/07 Jobcentre Plus helped 263 people with 6 month test trading and invested £523,000. 167 people have subsequently gone on to become self- employed with their own business.

In 2006/07 522 people started along the self-employment route with Jobcentre Plus. Of these people 375 opted for support on the business plan element and 263 then went on to the test-trading stage. This equates to a conversion rate of approximately 32% of people who start Jobcentre Plus self-employment provision have gone on to start their own business.
