Global Entrepreneurship Week Hull 2008
was one of the
largest events of its kind
in the country.
Primary pupils, secondary pupils and young apprentices took part in events at the KC Stadium, The University of Hull and the Guildhall between 17 November and 21 November 2008.
Primary school event - KC Stadium
The primary enterprise event on 19 November saw 200 children from 19 of Hull’s primary schools attend the young enterprise ‘Our World’ programme, On the theme of global trade, they learned about what we import and export, how far some of the food in our stores has travelled, and how other countries market products differently.
The young people heard from the High Commissioner of Mauritius Abhimanu Kudasamy and William Wilberforce.
They also took part in the launch of Hull Ready activity - Make £5 Blossom - with the help of young people from Thorpe Hesley Junior School in Rotherham

and the St Stephen's Centre and Rotherham Ready.
The most enterprising pupils were from Wold Primary School and they went on to develop a four-page insert in the Hull Daily Mail.
The runners-up were St Nicholas Primary and Paull Primary Schools.
The winners of the Premier League "Small World" Challenge to name all the players from the Hull City v Manchester City and the countries they came were pupils from Parks Primary.
Secondary school event
At the secondary enterprise day at Hull University on 21 November 200 pupils from 11 of Hull’s schools attended an Entrepreneurship Masterclass Pupils from Andrew Marvel School receive their award from Secretary of State for Health Alan Johnson MP", which challenges young people to think about starting their own business as a career and becoming an entrepreneur.
Key speakers included U-Explore chief executive Andy Pickles of Jive Bunny fame, Phil Batty of Force-7 and Phil Benson and Simon Long of Xing Health and Amanda Hartley of amandas Blue Orchid Diana Johnson MP introduced a recorded interview of Ed Balls MP Secretary of State for Children Schools and Families and Jim Knight MP Minister for Schools who were intervewed by Jordan Smith of Fireflight and Phil Batty of Force-7.

The pupils were encouraged to come up with business ideas. Pupils from Andrew Marvell School won an award for their idea. Secretary of State for Health Alan Johnson MP (pictured left) presented the prize to them, who is a patron of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership. This years Enterprise Awards for those who support Hull's enterprising young people went to Gordon Beastall, Steve Booth, Tony Lynn and Lynn Green. The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Award went to Alan Johnson MP
Apprentice day-Post 16
The apprentice enterprise day at the Guildhall saw 120 young people modern apprenticeship trainees from Hull TEC, Youth Apprentices, Skills Academy, Careers Choices and Hull ITeC, all part of Hull Training, along with teams from Hull College and the University of Hull, learn about how they could make their mark with their business ideas and skills.
A challenge was set for the apprentices to bring their ideas in front of a panel in a Dragon's Den-style activity.

The judges, the "bears", decided they would invest in the team from Hull TEC (pictured above), because of their innovative ideas using everyday products.
The young people also heard from blind adventurer Miles Hilton Barber and Hull born entrepreneur Mally Welburn.
