Bitwasp

Bitwasp Interactive Ltd is a small computer games business which was founded in September 2008 by James Stubbs and Oliver Copley. We had both studied Computer Science with Games Development at The University of Hull, and graduated from the University in the summer of 2008. Finding a gaming job in the Humber region proved difficult but around the time of graduation posters for the new enterprise centre had started popping up around campus. We put together a quick demonstration including a playable computer game and some market research and arranged a meeting with Adrian Allen, the centre manager. During the meeting the possibility of renting an office space in the planned enterprise centre was brought up as well as funding options to get our business started. Following the meeting we decided to look further into starting a business.
The decision to start a business rather than getting a job with our degree’s was not an easy one to make, but the prospect of working by our own terms and towards our own goals was exciting. After a lot of market research into the current small games market and having contact with some online game portals, we made the decision to start our own business.
We approached the Acorn fund and the Youth Enterprise Bank with the idea of our business, market research and an initial business plan. Both parties agreed to help us financially with the start-up costs of setting up our business. We now had a registered business with Companies House, a business plan in place and the initial funding required to help cover start-up costs and get us running smoothly.
In April 2009 we moved into our new office within the newly built Enterprise Centre at The University of Hull with the aim to target the ever expanding “casual game’s” market, as well as offering a service to other companies wishing to harness the power of games as a marketing tool. Shortly after moving into the office the Youth Enterprise Bank approached us with the idea of designing and developing a game for a website aimed at teaching local school children the importance of business and entrepreneurships. The business could not have got this far without the help and support offered by the Acorn fund, the Youth Enterprise Bank, and Adrian Allen at the Enterprise Centre. We would strongly recommend any young people with a good business idea to make good use of the help available in the Hull and Humber region.
