It has been a rollercoaster summer for young people: the euphoria of the best ever GCSE and A level results, offset by the doom and gloom of massive over-subscription for a dearth of university places and bleak employment prospects for graduates.
What kind of message does it give to bright young people equipped with dazzling grades, when 10s of thousands are scrambling for a relative handful of places through clearing? What must it be like to achieve six A grades at A level, three of them A*s, yet fail to secure a single offer of a university place?
